A Ton of 58 reissue"s

Im not sure were I expect this thread to go and its not spam. But Daves guitars has 62 or so R8"s in stock,,, CRAZY,,,, I am a big fan of R8s because I like bigger necks. So I have bought a few from this shop because they always have a huge selection in stock. But dam if they dont have me gassing for a new one. Even the plaintop vos have some figure to them. There may not be as many R9"S out there this year but there is no shortage of R8S from what I can see.

Some of those plain tops have as much flame as an original burst. That's a lot of 2012 R8's to move.

there all not 2012. I would say about 30 are 2012 plus they have a bunch of the daves ann, models. But I was shocked and yes that is a lot of guitars to move these days.

Re: A Ton of 58 reissue"s

Yeah I noticed this as well. I have said on here a few times if Gibson would do some R8s with lightly figured tops and different finishes they would sell. And its not just here in the States. I've noticed alot of overseas dealers getting some nice R8s. Not to take away form R9s but alot of the 2011 and 2012 R8s have nice authentic looking real burst type flame. Where as the really nice flame is going on the CC series and the higher end R9s. I noticed most 2012s Custom shop guitars are coming in the new reissue style brown cases but built better than the earlier brown cases. You can get them in about any variation of color and fade as well. I love the Western Desert fade. Kinda of a Tea burst but with a tad more red in it.

There are quite a few under 8.5 lbs and some great looking tops. I had to quit looking before I tossed one into the cart.

Those figured top R8's are about $850 more than the Plaintop R8s.

Joe, I saw his stock a few weeks back (online) There were some beauties and the prices were very competative......problem was (for me) necks were all in the ..895"-.915" range and very slight shoulders.....that took me out of the running

Some are jaw dropping like this one listed as a plaintop, yet mildly flamed.

Whatever technique Dave's is using on the photography it's strange. The contrast is pumped, to wash out the white background it appears, but it has an overall effect on the photo. It's impossible to tell what the guitar actually looks like.

Re: A Ton of 58 reissue"s

I think their web photography has always been an inaccurate respresentation.
These photos below are exaggerated in terms of detail and contrast to what this looks like in person, particularly the BRW neck. Not to change the subject matter because those R8s look cool and I'd actually love to go up there and see them.

Well, I bought a used mildy flamed R8 from Dave's. It caught my eye because it also had a vintage vibe to it. Once received, it looked close enough to the web pictures, that I had no issues regarding their photography.

Re: A Ton of 58 reissue"s

Here's an example of what I mean. Obviously these are two different guitars and comparing Bursts is not an exact science to begin with, but the imaging characteristics are evident.

Both similar looking plain Lemon tops. I bet these two guitars look very close side by side in real life.

The top photo is the older style from Dave's website. The light is a bit warm but relatively accurate for most natural household situations.

The newer example below uses a much more harsh angled light (evident in the tailpiece & the shadow on the bottom) and the contrast is pumped up. This does show grain patterns much
better but it's not what that guitar would look like in most natural light situations. You can also see that the colour of the inlays and plastic are affected by the shadow and highlight boost.

Personally I would feel very comfortable buying the top guitar over the phone. The bottom one I'd want new pics or an in-person viewing.

Good lord they're great looking LPs for sure.

So, for all your 'analysis' have you actually bought an R8 from him to come to these conclusions, as I have? The funny thing is the one I 'did' buy from them, actually had more flame in person that in his web pics, which is exactly opposite of what you are trying to infer.

It's not actually. But with 30 years of pro photo experience I stand by my "analysis" regardless of who can tell the difference or not. But if you're happy with how yours worked out that's cool.

Here is the one I bought. I just took a quick simple picture of it for you. This was sold as an R8 plaintop with "mild flame''. I cannot be happier with what I received vs what it looked like on their website. I did not save the website pictures.

Very nice indeed. I like it.

But I bet their online photo, if they used the same style that I have an issue with, looked nothing like that on the website. The fact that you were pleased in the end is great to hear but betcha that guitar looked different than you thought it did when you opened the case ... especially the colour. Me I don't like surprises

In fact your "quick simple" photo as you call it is way more accurate, I would be very happy using that for reference.

The point of my photo was to show how much flame they can have in person. My photo is accurate in that regard. I would not use my photo as a 'color reference' since the flash makes it look much redder than it really is. The guitar is actually "Ice Tea" in person. When purchased, it was shown on Dave's website pictures as Ice Tea also. His web pictures were actually a closer representation of the guitars true coloring, than my quick flash photo.

Wow MRTONEMAN that thing is beautiful. Wished I had saw it 1st. I did wind up with a nice 2011 R8 Stinger that is nice too. I love the color. The tone and it plays better than any new out of the box guitar Ive played, the only problem is its a tad heavy. Probably 9.5 lbs. Sounds killer too.

Thanks, The only negative side to mine was it really needed a setup bad when I got it. I worked with it, because, it was otherwise so desirable, in terms of flame, neck-profile, color, and being super-light (8.1 pounds), especially for an "R8". Now it plays as well as it looks.

That's the wrong use of the word "DAM"- when UPS gets the address wrong it's the "Fucking" truck.
