Let me know if thoughts are getting it that direction - this instrument is pure nostalgia for me - this model was my first electric guitar many years ago - and I really enjoyed it - it plays great and has that special look in tv finish - "help" I miss my old baby :( send her home

Janse, not to derail your thread, but these are not really RI's are they!? Bet they sound great none the less. I always wanted that early batch of 70's Specials with the wrap around to back up my '57 Special.

Re: 1977 Les Paul 55 77 reissue

Had one of those recently , always wondered why they used those odd shaped backplates... Otherwise a cool guitar , as I remember it had a 1-piece neck (mahogany) and the correct neck angle, no volute either.

I would think of it as some kind of 'reissue' as they named it 55-77 Les Paul, they had the 55 design in mind.

Re: 1977 Les Paul 55 77 reissue

Hi guys - this specific 55/77 is not really the perfect reissue but I enjoyed it a lot - it really plays well for me - and its a clean design - it doesnt have the wrap around like the first in 74 (i think) they were more accurate as reissues i trust - but i havent seen them in tv so far - but yes some kind of reissue - the 55/77 is not called Special either but LP Model ! Anyway for me its nostalgia and they are a bit hard to find here in Denmark - have found one - but double cut - but I dont really like that design on the LP. Anyway I just love that guitar and having a son started playing drums i need a cool rocking guitar to match him - my old ES175 cant keep pace with heavy tunes and funky stuff etc - so P90's and a solid body is needed !

Hi Dlaxc - how are we doing on the thinking which case do you carry the Lp in - mine was a brown + yellow inside - but havent seen any of those since I had the 55/77 myselve - i tink it was an original Gibson - but maybe not - actualy found a few more tv like yours but too far away in Japan - seems they have quite a few there but are htey then all original !! Found clip on the web stated that some reissues should have been either manufactored for Gibson in JP or copies - any knowledge of that ?

Hi Janse !
Greetings from another Danish LPF member.
With a little patience and luck you will find one comming up on the US Ebay or maybe even the UK Ebay. I have checked almost daily for years and have seen several. Good luck with the hunt and playing with JUNIOR !

This one came with the blue-lined chainsaw protector case. I also have a '74 wraptail re-issue. It is fantastic, also. The TOM is nice on these, though. I do play my '74 more. It's a solid player. This one is a beauty and I'm keeping it that way.

Re: 1977 Les Paul 55 77 reissue

I understand why you like them and keep them - just found 2 tobacco sunburst 55/77 - no tv yellow only in Japan too expensive and far away - and a 74 - however reserved - so I might just wait for the tv colour and just go for the guitar it selve - actually found a tv in Spain - but double cut - and thats not my taste - but the price differ much - do you know of any indicator - on these ? I have seen some at really quite high level in my opinion - but then again - if its there maybe its just as we say over here "close your eyes" and pay the price ?

Re: 1977 Les Paul 55 77 reissue

I had a '55-'77 reissue at one point--cool guitar and at the time was cheap. Downside was extremely low frets and extremely thin necks. I replaced the frets but still never bonded with the neck, so now it is gone.

And now the price of these has risen frightfully.

If you dig thin neck and low frets (and '70s mojo) this one is still cool, but if not I recommend the historic Special.

Re: 1977 Les Paul 55 77 reissue

Hi there - yes the reissue 55/74/77 are rather low - and can be hard to adjust as I remember - then again my old 175 is also a pain to tune in perfcet - I have actually have a specialist guy doing mine - as i always **** it up when i try to put new strings on -anyway - I enjoy the thin neck and low frets - its for me quick and fast action - and I dont find that in the new issues - they are "fatter" in the neck higher - and as I have several classical guitars I dont need more high frets the 1992 reissue has the neck like 55/77 but so far I have only found one in red - not my favourite eventhoug it has much of the old real junior in it at least by the looks design and feel - but its so "new" - prices are up but not too bad fo rme - actually right now I have one for 2500 us - resonable and found another for 1500 us even better - but they are sunburst not tv - and thats my "love" as seen above by Dlacx - that lucky man - so I am willing to pay "the price" and more for a nice one - even though it might to much all in all - but its nostalgia - it was the first electric - just want it back for a small collection and to enjoy - 55/74 will be my next project to land And fro those of you being in the US lucky you - we have many LPs but not compare to the homeland - so hunting here means all over the world - and so far I have been to Japan - israel - germany - france - spain - and of cours ethe states but its a big area to find a small guitar in tv from 77 hope to hear from you guys and your nice input -

Re: 1977 Les Paul 55 77 reissue

I had a 55-77 in TV yellow. The finish on these is absolutely gorgeous. I was actually amazed that Gibson could still do a finish liek this in the late 70's.

As a player, the neck was slim with those low profile frets - not my favorite. Compared to my singlecut 50's Special, it was pretty flat sounding. But it was very pretty.

Not a bad price either.

I'd be interested in the 'backstory'...who they seized it from and why...though that detail won't be forthcoming.

Thanks for the lead to Germany - took a look at it - the price dont scare but the look and case does - I like mint or close, like the one above from Dlacx wich looks very cool and cared for. Actually I found one in Japan - not tv - and the price app 3700 us ! Now we are talking high price - and that might be too much unless its completely untouched .

Re: 1977 Les Paul 55 77 reissue

Yes - the prices are rather high in Japan as I can see - dont know why but maybe due to many copies from the east made in these years - so they pay top price for originals - I just found a 55/74 - its about 1800 us + 55/77 - 2700 us ! But neither are tv - and that's what I want - even thoug the sunburst are nice as well - sp maybe I just have to buy a sunburst and then wait untill Dlacx is getting warm or somebody else - its crazy with these guitars - actually I can get a the brand new VOS for less - but the neck is thick as a baseball bat - and has no soul. But does anyone has any records of the fact that some 55/74 are called special - some model - then again - with diffrent imprint on the back of the headstock ! Also some are stamped made in usa + 55/77 etc - its like they just did them as they felt on the day of production And also some with tuners in plastic - some in metal some gibson - some are Kluson - some pots dating 73 ! - really its a guitar that was first reissue and then did they know what they wanted - I think they did with the 55/77 - no wrap -tuneomatic etc just a bit more modern - and then again - in between the chairs - original - and then not ! ! I love it - a real personality.

Re: 1977 Les Paul 55 77 reissue

Dlacx - if you are on - how is your serial number + is it stamped made in usa - actually just found one on ebay - byt I really cant figure out when its from - the serial number goes beyond 77 i am sure its too long and no stamp - I dont remember the numbering on the one i had - but it seems wrong somehow - but could it then be from 78 -79 or later - a correct 77 should read 06xxxxxx ! Its a jungle with these serial numbers - especially in these years.

Re: 1977 Les Paul 55 77 reissue

Thanks Dlacx - that's how it should look in 77 - the one I found must be different year / copy or - but its not a 77 as far as I can see - but they made after 77 I think - so that might be why.
I still hunting - but its hard to find a nice one in tv and the correct year - have a sunburst on hold - so maybe I should go for that - untill a tv pops up for sale. Are even considering the 55/74 right now - found one of these as well - and they only come in sunburst as far as I have seen.

Been aroung yahoo and google a million times - no luck.

Re: 1977 Les Paul 55 77 reissue

I'm not a guitar player so forgive my ignorance. My friend is trying to unload a Les Paul. On the back of the headstock it reads

Les Paul 55-77
Made in USA
0xxx2xxx

It's a dark sun burst, with black PF90s and it does not say "Special" on the front of the headstock.

I think by convention of serial numbers this would be a 2002. Did they make these in 2002?

I don't know if forum rules allow, but what would this be worth? Rough range probably a 8/10 condition.

Thanks
A bass player...

Chuck, when you sent me the pics, I didn't know that the serial number was a decal as opposed to inpressed. That changes everything. The "06" is a prefix, they also used a "00" prefix, which designates another year. So I'd believe it to be a 1977, rather than a 2002.

1977 Serial numbers don't follow the modern convention. '55-'77 was built as a reissue in 1977.

I had one, very cool guitar with plenty of mojo even though not historically correct to 1955. Alas, I sold it, even after investing some new frets in it (original low wide frets were very low) because I could not love the thin flat neck.

Hey All,

First post here. Janse, are you still looking for one of these, I found one.

http://www.gbase.com/gear/gibson-les...issue-sunburst - Vintage burst, $2500

It comes with the original case and is seemingly in mint condition.

Yeah, that's just like the one I used to have. Cool guitar, but I can't think of any good reason to pay that much money for it. Maybe for a $1,000 less.

THere's one (in sunburst) for sale on Craigslist Boston. DOn';t recall the price offhand - I'm pretty sure it's under $1000 US. It's popped up a few times over the past couple months, I've been tempted, but one look at my bank statement,
:(
