That being the case, It looks like they have to start the process with a much larger steel blank, and cut it down to size on a lathe. Cool.

Re: Off-set Tailpiece STUDS

Yes, for the "offset" stud, the steel billet is larger and the machining is much more complicated and time consuming (vs. the "standard" stud)

Re: Off-set Tailpiece STUDS

When I first got my 2006 R0 the TP was way off. It lined up almost directly into the Bridge Vol knob. I had the right side stud hole doweled, redrilled and moved 1/16th up and it was STILL off. Now I am getting two of these to move the TP up another 1/16th toward the bridge. I can't use just one as the angle would be too noticeable now.

Re: Off-set Tailpiece STUDS

I think it would look good on my R7. From the angle of this picture, the current stud placement has the illusion of being uneven the opposite way. I have the original studs and TP on it right now, it'll be interesting to see how the tone is affected by using the steel.

Re: Off-set Tailpiece STUDS

I'm looking forward to seeing more photos of these installed and feedback, tone reports, etc.

On a related note, seeing Mars Hall's avitar, were the stop tailpieces slightly angled on the '50s ES-3x5 guitars like the Les Pauls? These would also probably work great on reissue ES guitars

Measuring top and bottom, this 63 345 TP is slanted, compared to the PU, using this photo. I'll measure the actual guitar when I get a chance.

Re: Off-set Tailpiece STUDS

You cannot use the pickup placement on a vintage guitar as a frame of reference, as they are not always placed perpendicular to the center line of the guitar. The bridge pickup on my '61 SG/LP--stock from the factory--is PARALLEL with the bridge. In short, it's WAY off. You need to measure from the center line with a protractor. That will tell you for sure. By the way, the bridge pickup on that 345 is pretty far off, too. That's what happened back then with their factory-made jigs.

Did you already have steel studs? If so, did you hear any difference?

The only negative is...they make me realize how inadequate the rest of the hardware and plastic is on this guitar. Upgrade time!

Re: Off-set Tailpiece STUDS

Thanks for the compliment. I thought it was a cool idea and hoped others would as well. It was quite a bit of work to nail down all the details and get them done "right" but thanks to working with Kim I think they came out great. I'm really happy to see that the feedback on them has been mainly positive.

Re: Off-set Tailpiece STUDS

I had no problem (even with the topwrapping) with changing one of mine out other than the '59 studs are no longer in this guitar.

Re: Off-set Tailpiece STUDS

Two sets arrived through my letterbox today. I've put them on both my '03's and they certainly help with the illusion of a more 'correct' stud placement on the pre-09 historics. I was able to screw the offset studs right down to the metal on both of mine. The studs don't seem to suck any tone either... which is nice.

Good job guys!

Re: Off-set Tailpiece STUDS

As someone mentioned, I would like to know if (intonation wise) could be possible to put a set of those in my 54 GT RI, I would love to have the wraparound pigtail bridge with more "correct" angle, but I donīt know if I will be able to intonate the guitar...

And one more related question: wich of the two studs would you change with the offset one?

On the wraptail you would also put the offset on the treble side

Frank,

I'm not into "tops," and I don't have the impression that you posted for that reason either. However, I really enjoy the appearance of your Paul in this thread. The guitar is interesting and authentic - very nice.

Thanks guys! I'm kinda partial to this one too. I have my share of rare and unique guitars, ones with very nice flame and old looking ones, but this one just seems to have it all. I feel very fortunate.

I like it, I just changed the one stud, left the longer (50s) one in the bass side.

How about putting both offset studs on a R4?
The angle looks so big on the old ones.

Re: Off-set Tailpiece STUDS

Still waiting for my studs. After the first week went by and they hadn't arrived, I emailed, they replied they were waiting on a batch of the straight studs. It is now the beginning the 4th week of waiting and both of my last 2 emails have gone unanswered. Anyone privy to what going on with them? From all that I've read on this forum, they have a very good reputation. I don't mind waiting, but the unanswered emails have me a little nervous.

Thanks Kim, I thought it "out of character" to not get a response. I sent my last 2 emails as a "reply" to your last response. Maybe that has something to do with it. I only do it that way so someone could easily review the other emails, if needed.

As long as I know you're still working on it I'm all good. Thanks again!
