Educate me; what's the shading at the transition at the headstock and heel? Also it says "coming soon"; what does this mean?

That is a really lame display. What is with all of the Gibson secrecy this year? What are we in grade school??? Is 2009, maybe tell your customers what products you are offering for 2009. Hello?

So what are the odds that we'll see an uncovered Double White pickup in it?

I'd say that it wouldn't be a #2 replica without it. Page still had the uncovered double white in the bridge for the o2 gig so it's safe to assume it's still there.

Which brings me to question what do we actually know about this guitar?

1959 Gibson Les Paul "No. 2"
#2 was a '59 Burst (Serial# 91703) which Page is believed to have bought sometime shortly after the '73 US tour in England. The guitar didn't make an appearance until January 1975, and would only be used this year except for a noise solo at Knebworth. #2 was the Kashmir guitar in 1975, not the Danelectro. It was also sometimes used for Dazed and Confused, Moby Dick, and Over the Hills and Far Away. You can see Kashmir, Over the Hills and Far Away and Moby Dick performances with #2 at Earls Court in '75.

This is NOT the ex-Joe Walsh guitar. Where this idea got started I don't quite know for sure but most likely it stems from the confusion over the year of #1. During a interview in 1977 Page was asked about his main Les Paul; he replys with it being a '59 and how he got it from Joe Walsh. Considering the idea how many people thought his #1 was a '58 early on, it's likely they thought #2 was the Walsh guitar because it was a confirmed '59 and Page says he got the '59 from Walsh not realizing Jimmy was referring to his #1.

I mentioned the white PAF in #1 earlier, well on #2 the bridge pickup cover was also sometimes off revealing yet another white PAF. Many people think this is #1 when it's seen without the cover because of the white PAF, not realizing the white PAF in #1 was just replaced. The neck was also shaved to replicate the same profile that was on #1.

Number 2's wiring
#2 IS the one that had the under-pickguard switches for series/parallel and phase switching which were installed in the early 80's, not during Led Zeppelin. Supposedly the switches were painted white at one point. 4 push pulls were also installed to add the ability of coil splitting each pickup and the option of putting all 4 coils in parallel. The wiring mods were done by Steve Hoyland.

January 1975
Sound check in Minneapolis

March 1975 - The LA Forum.
Note the more extreme flame compared to #1. One of the easiest ways to tell the two guitars apart.

1980's
The pickguard switches. Credit goes to huw from Royal Orleans for scanning the photo!

December 2007 - London, the O2
Last year at the reunion show

Both Number 1 and Number 2 side by side in 1982.

So the reissues would need to at least have:

1. Double white bridge pickup uncovered.
2. We know it has Grovers.
2. Darkburst/Dark cherry finish.
3. Neck carve matching #1.
4. All the phase switching doo-dahs. (Doubt we'll get the pickguard switches though.)

Sounds pretty sweet!

Like I said in the other thread; soon Gibson will have issued the entire "Page Collection".

I'm holding out for a "Made In USA" #3.

Re: Jimmy Page #2 reissue at NAMM

I don't understand how they could accurately replicate the wiring mods without the pickguard switches unless Page has recent removed them. The 4push/pulls are already being used for coil split and putting all 4 coils in parallel as stated in a 1982 Guitar Heroes article.

I think they'll just use the '97 sig wiring

Kind of lame then if you ask me. The guitar is probably most known for the pickguard switches.

Could have been overspray from refinishing after the neck shave, no?

Yeah, seriously, I do actually want one. I think that guitar is iconic enough from its appearance at the end of The Song Remains The Same to warrant a replica series. Surely there's a demand for it from us Page nuts? And I'd rather one of those than the really high end #1, #2, Custom and Doublenecks; I'd be more likely to get away with playing it at my local jam night.

I saw a photo of Jimmy playing #3 at the O2 gig. With all the options he has at his fingers he clearly still has a fondness for that one.

May as well give this link another airing. Just noticed I've been name-checked in it. Cool.

Ace pics of... pretty much everything Pagey there. Nice top carve on #3!

Thanks I enjoyed that. I went to the 1994 Led Zep convention and spoke with Jimmy's guitars tech. He was very guarded of his tone.

Re: Jimmy Page #2 reissue at NAMM

I still don't understand the logic of Gibson replicating an iconic guitar from its current appearance... I believe they should choose a period from its heyday to base it on. If I wanted to buy a Jimmy Page #1 or #2, I'd want it to look as close as possible to how it looked in the 70's ...just my thoughts.

Yeah, I could care less about push pull pots, or switches under the pick guard. I want them as they were in the 70s.

That said, if they DID do a #3 Purple Paul reissue, I guess they probably would put the B-Bender on it which sucks.

Re: Jimmy Page #2 reissue at NAMM

the trouble with making one from the hey day is that it does not look like that now - in case they borrow it to study it. and assuming Jimmy improves the guitars over time, they are allegedly getting the guitar at its best. but then again, having one the way it was back at the height of popularity would be great too. maybe they should make different versions of the guitar - one for now and one from back then! Gibson would never run out of them to sell! as it is, they are about to run out of popular Page guitars to remake.
