Anything below 8.5 is Uber light, but anything below 9 I would consider good.

That all depends on what is acceptable to YOU!!
My Les Paul weighs 8 pounds 10 ounces.

Would you think it's too heavy??

No under 9 I consider light. I'm not saying a 9+ guitar is bad, or too heavy, but I like them light.
It's what I would shoot for. Anything under 8.5 seems pretty rare based off all the weights I have seen.
I have seen more old ones than Reissues, and the killer old ones are usually pretty light.

Weight

I had a 58, now have a 59 - at 8 lbs 5oz and 8 lbs 6oz.

I don't know if weight and tone are related, but from my experience, the lighter ones are definitely more resonant - my 9 lb+ Goldtop was about as resonant as a log compared to the others - draw your own conclusions.

My lemon burst is a flat 8 lbs with the aluminum tailpiece and stock pickups, it went up an ounce with the hotter pickup. The killertop is just over 8lbs, and the 2 guitars are different in tone and personality. On the other hand one of my 99 R9s was probably almost 9lbs, and that had a big sound for a heavier guitar. My two 01s are almost the same weight, one is nice and smooth, and the other sizzles. It seems the weight game can be a hit and miss thing, I heard real light ones that were treble monsters, and other light ones that were dull as a butter knife.

I like mine under 8 pounds 8 ounces. The lighter the better for me.

Yeah. THe Junior weighs 8 pounds 3 ounces (heavy for a Junior) , and the Y2K might be an ounce or two heavier than that. It's really hard to tell when you're talking about trying to tell a couple ounces difference in weight on such bulky items without a scale.

forget the iron, pump wood

The weight issue with me is becoming more comfort related as I get older. I have learned that a light doesn't always sound great, but tend to be more resonant. I'm finding a Les Paul over 8 1/2 lbs becomes painful by the third set.

Thanks for your imput.I found an R8 on the internet.I originally wanted a real light one (under 8.5).I've tried real hard to get the lightest one i can find with a nice top.I have found a nice ,unique top.The guitar weighs 8.7,a little more than i wanted ,but you have to compromise somewhere right?I was just interested in the average weight of all your guitars and your experience with the weight issue.I can't afford more than one of these badboys ,so I want to get it right the first time.

i agree with Joe. Why do you like the light ones, Ed? I always hear guys complain about the weight but I never notice it. I get used to whatever I have hanging around my neck. I really don't have a preference for light guitars. It is like Rich said the weight game is hit or miss to some degree, in Les Pauls at least.

With the bad disc I have in my neck, I can feel a huge difference after 2 hours of playing between my 8lb, 10oz. R9 and my '71 LP which is 10lb. 10oz. Its only 2lbs difference but that '71 feels like 100lbs after a couple hours.

Approx. 30 original bursts have weights listed in the back of the Beauty of the Burst Book. They range from 8 even to 9 1/2 lbs. with most being in the mid to upper 8s. I personally have found that range to GENERALLY have the best tone Im looking for. I had one that was 8lbs. 2oz and it was too bright with not enough mids for my taste. But that doesnt mean that you cant find some killer sounding lighter or heavier ones, every piece of wood is different. I prefer in the 8s but if I found a great sounding one at 9 1/4 I wouldnt say no to it.

Also, they did not list the weight of Pearly Gates but I thought it was interesting in the interview with the Rev. that the original owner wanted to trade for an SG because he thought Pearly was too heavy.

multiplier

In my copy of 'beauty of the burst' the weights are listed in grams. To convert the grams into pounds just multiply the grams by .0022047 and you'll convert the weight to pounds.
