Re: Gibson Flying "V"s lets see them

I am a big fan of a Lonnie Mac V and I have been looking for one sfor some time now...they are becoming very expensive and I regret haven't got one some 2 or 3 years back when they were like 2.5K.
Todaym it's going to be almost a double.

I heard that they were like 150 guitars made in 93 or 94 and all in cherry red finish.Never heard of a natural finish mahoganey one.
BTW this model is 100% mahogoney, no korina wood.

Here are mine....

The Gothic is sporting mirror guard with stock pups.

The Kahler loaded one had its Kahler built custom at Kahler with Gary Kahler and John. It is a PAF Kahler (an old frame but certainly collectible). The pic was prior to my setting up the trem. It has stock pups as well.

Re: Gibson Flying "V"s lets see them

I was never into V's until I got and repaired an '83 Korina reissue that had been tossed out of a 2nd fl window (by an angry gf, or so I was told).

Here's a before and after pic. Someone had tried to fix it with wood screws. The neck was hanging on by a thread. The tenon was broken, the body was cracked on one side of the upper bout near the neck and the other side of the upper bout (near the screw holes) was missing a large chunk. I had to carve it square and glue in a new piece out of mahogony.

I gave the guy who found it $200 and spent about $50 in supplies and tools. My wife bought me an Epi V case for it (I put a round "Gibson pure" sticker over the big "E"). I got a lot of repair advice at mimf.com and my effort is part of the archived library there. It playes and sounds like a dream. After moving the strap button from the end to the inside of the upper V, it''s very well balanced.

I would love to get a Natural finish Flying V but I would probably end out changing the ceramics to 57s or BBs I did that with my LP Classic.

Here's my '83 Custom Shop Korina. The red is a '50's Chevy color. Rick Nielson has an original '58 in this color that he swore to me was custom ordered that way. I thought it looked amazing, so I had Gibson do one for me. I seem to remember that Tim Shaw did some research and was able to corroborate Nielson's claim. He even knew the exact paint to use!

It's an 84 with a kahler trem and was in bad shape so I took the chance to do some pretty major mods. Plays like a dream now...

My heavily modified '89 USA. Put in '57s, RS electronics (added tone pot - moved the switch and jack), antiqued finish....

Re: Gibson Flying "V"s lets see them

Well,...here's my plain jane 1980 V. I got it used w/OHSC about 10 years ago for $500canadian. Which isn't such a bad deal since everything's a little more expensive up here.

I had to replace a tone pot that was doing 360's. It was rotted to shit from some ugly acidic drink spilled onto it and had soaked it's way into the internals.

Here's what I plug it into ina mix and match way, depending on the size of the room and how much stage area is available.

My V has a Seymour Duncan in the neck and it's turned around.(out of phase?) But there's no strange 'other tone'. It sounds normal to me but that's how I got it.

And I guess it's obvious I don't play a lot of ballads or love songs.

Here’s my original ’67 – lot’s of details and tall tales which I won’t bore you with now…

If you’d like to hear it, here is a very recent original production, “Hot Plate”, recorded on my porta-studio, which features my improving vocals (I’m almost mediocre!), and the “V” on all the guitar tracks...hope ya'll get a kick out of it
