• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Question on this one.....it is a '72..no doubt. Was there ever a time when Gibson did not put the Les Paul singature on the headstock? This one is blank
and the headstock definitely has not had a repair of a bad break which might have destroyed the 'Les Paul'.
Any help is appreciated.

They were silkscreened back then which is very cool. I have one. That means it is raised paint. If it were rubber or touch a lot it would go away.

Thanks for the feedback, Elmore. This headstock overlay has been finely sanded but not polished out...for whatever reason they sanded it I haven't a clue. Above the Gibson logo, the original paint is untouched and bright. Below the Gibson logo, the finish is dulled. Teh logo shows the expected 'edge' shrinkage in the lacquer and looks to be totally orignal. There has been no damage to the top of the overlay, and the headstock has not been broken in such a way as to damage the overlay, either. Maybe someone didin't like the silkscreened Les Paul....who knows.
There are some 'crop circles' where someone left long strings that were bent toward the headstock and etched their pathways whiel being tuned into the lacquer. Maybe someone started to 'rectifiy' that and took the Les Paul off...not realizing that it was silkscreened on top of the finish.
