I know some people really like 1970s era GIBSONs, I had nothing but bad luck with them. Although they sounded great, the overall craftsmanship was horrible:ha .
From 1978 - 2003 I was without any GIBSON products. In the fall of 2003 I went through several EPIPHONE LPs. One afternoon I compared one of my EPIPHONEs to #6 (see above) and I was totally blown away with the quality and sound of the new GIBSON vs the EPIPHONE. I ended up selling the EPIPHONE to a guy in the parking lot of the music store where I bought the 2003 GIBSON. He gave me $50.00 more than what the music store would allow on trade in.
Except for the 1972 Deluxe, the rest of those LPs were an attempt to recapture the tone and quality of the "68" GT. My R9 has more than fulfilled that quest!:jim
60'ish, I used to buy & sell a lot, still have three. Two of those are keepers. They were low cost to me and I don't mind losing the money on them when I die and they get passed down.
ive owned 11, only have 3 left. 2- 2010 50's tributes & a 2004 CR4, the cr4 is my current #1. the only 3 i regret selling long ago a 61 jr, a 57 jr, & a 1980 or 81 ? special order 58' burst reissue, cherry sunburst w/ a flame top, zebras, & only $750.00 new. i wonder where they ended up at ?
70's Les Paul Recording (wish I had it back)
'75 Gold Top Deluxe ( a green topped beauty, really wish I had it back)
'92 Classic Plus Darkburst( sounded good with 57 classics in it but the neck was way to slim)
'83 30th Annv. GoldTop( looked way better than it sounded, easily weighed 10 lbs)
'03 R9 ( still have this with Tom Holmes pickups in it, great guitar0
I'm more of a Strat guy, but I love my Les Paul Std Faded. Occasionally, I think of getting a shiny new Les Paul. But mine gives me exactly the Les Paul tones that I wanted for years.
