Deep Cherry Sunburst R9s against a '59 Burst

Someone had asked whether there were any reissues that were closer to the color of my '59 Burst. Here is a shot of:

. 2009 '59 Reissue in Desert Sunset Burst
. Duane Allman Signature Burst
. 1999 '59 Reissue Murphy Aged
. Vintage 1959 Burst
. 2009 '59 Reissue in Cognac Burst
. 2009 '59 Reissue in DaPra Bourbon Fade

What do you think comes closest to the real Burst?

Between the bourbon fade and cognac i think.

A whole lot of booze seems involved though!

It's interesting what the camera does to colors, especially reds. When you're looking at them in person, the DaPra Bourbon Fade is a brighter cherry color than the real Burst.

I vote the Cognac. If it was a little lighter with a bit more red on the outer part, it would be extremely close.

Mike

Awesome shot !!!

I think the color of your real burst really shows that a lot the magic of older guitars is the way the old laquer ages. As the finish hardens and yellows the guitar almost has a glow compared to the others.

Thats lineup is stunning !!!

The flame on your allman looks REAL close to the original one.

Re: Deep Cherry Sunburst R9s against a '59 Burst

Definitely the Duane Allman is the closest color-wise. Your real burst has a little bit more dark around the perimeter, but value-wise, they look nearly identical in your photo.

I've found no matter which camera you use, the reds are accentuated. I've had the best luck with a Canon G9 using manual settings and white balance. The photos of my Valentine are pretty dead-nuts accurate (see below) - note the gradual fade-off of the red rather than the harsh line that isn't actually there when you see the guitars? I'd highly recommend the Canon G9 or newer G10 for shooting bursts. It'd be great to see your collection shot with a camera that can handle it.

Re: Deep Cherry Sunburst R9s against a '59 Burst

The thing I notice most is not the burst color at all, but the differential in the plastic color. While the trend seems to be toward whiter plastic, it would appear that the real McCoy has a pinker/fleshier color. And the inlays seem to have a grayer color than the bright modern historic reissues (closer to that 2001 color). Very interesting seeing it side by side with the others - stands out quite a bit...

Excluding the below the waist fade, of course, I'd say the "Duane" nails it! NICE stuff.

It would be much more apparent if the DaPra Bourbon in this pic were more of a plaintop!!! But this is definitely the closest.

Re: Deep Cherry Sunburst R9s against a '59 Burst

don't get me wrong, but aside from more dark around the edges on two of them, the colors look remarkably similar to me tint wise.

....in that picture at least.

Not really a very good test, IMO.

Nice picture, beautiful guitars...just not a very good test for color.

I would say that the one on the right has more similar shade pattern to the '59.

I've been noticing the same thing with the colour of the plastics. The actual colour of the original burst plastic looks to be a discoloured, yellowed white where as the reissues come in either pink or some form of white. Even the aftermarket plastics are generally white which again intrigues me.

I can only put this down to an odditiy in consumers requirements. They want an original looking guitar including dents, wear, checking etc. but want the plastic to look as it would originally.

Go figure!

I think if you combine Duane upper bout switch and horn area, with the bourbon fades lower bout area you get there. As for closest all around I think the Duane is closest in color.

Duane's guitar the first time I saw it in `71, was very purple-ish on the dark areas, especially by the switch. Too bad it didn't stay that way. It was a wonderful, see thru dark reddish purple.

I agree. Btw, the finishes aren't done by "Gibson", they are done by people who work for Gibson and each one of those people bring their own tastes, talents and interpretations to the process. I suspect this was also true in the 50s. I watched this being done when I was at Gibson for training. It's romantic, but silly, to think there was any special mojo to the process back then, there were some guitars that turned out great, some not so much, same as now. To my eyes this photo proves that the finishes are as good now as ever, taken collectively.

For instance:

IMO, based on how well Mike's Burst blends in with the surrounding Historics, I think Gibson is doing a great job in the finishing department.

Mike,

They are ALL GREAT looking guitars Since everyones monitors may show colors a bit different, I think the real question is (since you see them all in person), which do you think comes the closest to your original 59

Something tells me that the 50th Anniversary Heritage Cherry is much darker than the 59 Vintage Burst....
