Great pics, thanks a lot for sharing! There are not many pics of this guitar so these frames are really useful.

Anytime, I love the tone of Koss dark Burst. You can see in one of the shots how high the tail piece is set.

Re: Kossoff Burst

Man that plaintop dark sunburst LP he played on the one vid just blowed me away and I'm not the biggest plaintop fan. It looks like a new off the rack R8 darkburst you would find today some 30 some yrs later. Kossoff was something else. His vibrato was unmatched and nobody that I recall was using it like that back then.

Not a pliantop though. You can see the figure in the above shots. The subtle flame makes that guitar just so beautiful, just perfect in all regards. Anyone know who owns it now?

Re: Kossoff Burst

There's a picture on page 22 of "Heavy Load...Free" of a very young Paul
Kossoff. He's playing what looks like an heavily flamed 'Burst. Although the photo is in B&W, you can clearly see the distinct figuring, it makes the guitar look like a Dark Burst of sorts. Koss looks aound 15 in the picture, and it's evidently a performance shot; he's playing thru an old Marshall

Is the Burst in this picture one that has been identified and photographed?

Re: Kossoff Burst

Hi PLANKSPANKER,
That would be this one, the Black Cat Bones Burst now owned by Gary Winterflood I believe, I wonder how much that one's faded now.

Just a quick update on the Koss reissue possibility, my digital pix of the A.R. burst are on route to Gibson, trouble is I've heard thru a reliable source that Gibson have not yet decided which one to 'reissue' the A.R. burst or the Isle of Wight stripped one, get behind me in the queue whichever one it is !!

I'd like to see the Koss 58 Dark Burst. Either way it's gonna be a lot more than 5K.

Nylon saddles! Clearly it was stripped, but then at least clear coated.

Re: Kossoff Burst

I’m new to Kossoff as I’m only 51 years young and really beginning to appreciate what I’ve been missing and get to play a few Free songs in the band I've just joined

As a Mick Ronson fan also, I’d love to know when Kossoff sanded has Les Paul and the reason why

Hi BILLY PORTER,
Welcome to the Paul Kossoff appreciation club, I'm just a year older than you and been into Koss since I was 16, It's never too late to come aboard, there's a lot more people would also like to know who and when the stripped burst got 'stripped' and why. anyway here's another photo. Frank

As far as i know, the sanded burst was already in that condition when Koss got it. There is also a small photo of him with it in Heavy Load that shows it with a black pickguard.

Excellent thread! Thanks for taking time to post that pic for us! Koss will always be my number one favorite player. I have always wished that Gibson would do a Koss LP.

"..I have always wished that Gibson would do a Koss LP"

Wow - that would be a tough one! Which of his many Les Paul's would you pick to represent him? Considering there aren't any Darkburst reissues, that may be the way to go.

I was fortunate to see them open for Blind Faith in Santa Barbara in '69, and assumed the guitar he had was a Goldtop (I wasn't near the stage, but close enough). Apparently, it must've been the stripped finish one, as he played it during the Isle of Wight a couple of weeks later. I had been following them since Tons Of Sobs, so it was very special for me to catch them that night.

Tone, economy, and taste. That's Koss...

Re: Kossoff Burst

I would buy a Kossoff LP like a shot. I wouldn't hesitate.

Listening to Koss, my all time favourite guitarist by a mile, is always nerve jangling to me. Whenever I see him play live on video, or even listen to Free Live, which I have played a hundred times, I'm always on the edge of my seat willing him on. It isn't a comfortable listen, and sometimes I just cringe, but I love the guy so much. I know he is good on Free Live, but I still listen to it as if I don't know what will happen. I cant help it.

To me, watching Koss is just like watching my little boy in the Christmas school play - I'm just so willing him on at every step.

Koss could be sublime, but also he could be a disaster. I think it was this humanity that put him above all others.

Yep, I agree and they wouldn't throw Koss' vibrato in the box either!! Bastards!

Ha! Thats right! His vibrato is unrivalled. I spent hours and hours trying to get that as a teenager - never did, though.

And Hey DH, How the hell are you?

I'm liking your new avatar - who did it? Is it you? It looks a little like LP himself? I'd like to see it at a larger size?
