Gibson is replacing my R8!

Well, a thanks is due to Ernie King at the Gibson custom shop. He offered to fix my original and have it back in 4 weeks or find another that was as good as the one I returned. He has found me two replacement LPs to choose from based on my criteria and has sent me pics of the two. They both look nice with subtle figuring. I have to call him Friday AM and tell him which one to ship.

I think everything went well at a time when I was feeling a bit worried about a major purchase.:dude

Ernie is a good guy. He's also one helluva great guitar player!

It's a win win win. You get a better guitar, the dealer gets a sale and Gibson has a happy camper ready to buy more of their gear down the line.

I like them both equally. The neck and tone would be the deciding factors I guess.

you're in between a rock and a soft place. :dude

A nice place to be, for once.

Of course, since I can't compare tone over the phone, I gotta go on looks. I'll discuss each guitar with Ernie and get his opinion on tone and feel. I'm glad Mike Slub thinks he's a good player, it eases the anxiety.spin

Ed is a really nice guy and as mike said an amazing guitar player. He's a 'suit' that knows how to lay it down.

Ask him which one he would pick. After talking to him, I'd definitely take his advice.

Nice to hear everything worked out well!
Tough choice; both look great, but if I had to pick one, I'd go with the bottom one. A little more unique grain.

I'd go w/ the top one, it has a little less red in it. However if the other sounded like a dream I'd have to go w/ that one. The bottom pic sure shows its nice carve though

I like the flat sawn look of the bottom one; didn't really see the grain in the top one, but it looked like it might have slightly more figure. That real subtle figure that just kind of flashes here and there is really pretty cool.

You could try listening to them over the phone; I saw Paul at Gruhn's playing a Martin over the phone for a customer. FWIW.

Sounds like your man at Gibson could make a pretty good selection for you.

The bottom one *appears* to have less break angle from bridge to TP, but hard to tell. I think I'd go with the bottom but would defer to Ed and let him tell you since he can get his hands on it.

I took the pics into photoshop and really exagerrated the grain just to see a little clearer.

I LOVE the way the top one flows and, by coincidence, the serial number is exactly 100 away from the one I returned (83032 and 8 3132)

Anyone notice the BOSS OD-1 just visible in the bottom left of the top photo?

Gibson Custom Shop groovin' with a touch of classic overdrive?

I like the second one - great grain - much like mine. Color will fade. But, yes, which one plays and sounds better? AND good point about the break angle of the TP and TOM - go for the lower TOM!

A hand picked guitar from Gibson??......how cool is that? I think they treated you very well. Thats the kind of customer service you just dont see very often anymore..........I like the one on the right.........I'll bet they both are killer though, and probably both would be keepers......congrats!!!

NEWSFLASH . . . . . . . .

Called Ernie this morning and he went and played both guitars for ahwile, called me back, and for tone playability picked. . .

3135

Said it had a feel and tone he really liked. It was like splitting hairs as far as cosmetic differences go.

I also asked about getting some sort of documantation for the exchanged instrument, and he's gonna write me up a letter on Gibson letterhead that I can keep just in case.

It will ship on Monday (don't want it in holding over the weekend) and I should have it by Wednesday, when I'm supposed to call him back and give him feedback.

If anybody from Gibson is reading this, thank Ernie for me again.

:dude

And to all the forum members, thanks for your supportspin

That's great to hear!
I didn't want to say before, but based on the grains, that's the one I liked best.
