Re: New Gibson Firebird I (Clapton)

Man shes a beaut. after the nickle tarnishes a little she will really look good. at least the Custom shop put the gold reflector knobs on it instead of the incorrect black although Gibsons reissue Gold knobs leave something to be desired. Alllparts inserts on their gold knobs look more like the old reflectors.

Just had the exact moment with the Kerry green. The price is great but I expect to import to the Uk, duty, tax and shipping will add another $1600, so tomorrow I'm going to see if a can order one in Kerry from a UK dealer . But my oh my just one of the prettiest guitars I've EVER seen - and I'm going to have one. Meantime Pe a beauty, enjoy just a fab bird.

Re: New Gibson Firebird I (Clapton)

Well spoke to a big UK Gibson dealership this morning, it will take 3 to 4 weeks to get a quote back from Gibson, and a build between 3/6 months, if they can produce the guitar, phone call to Dave's this afternoon to see if an import is a goer.

Yeah, I've done business with Dave's a few times over the years. We're both on the Advisory Board for "The Tonequest Report". I bought my R-4 from him back in `08 for a really nice price. Nice folks to do business with. also Wildwood Music is great too!

If nothing else could you have one of us Forum Bros someone you know or trust buy from Daves and then ship it to you as a gift? Or you could buy from Daves have it sent to someone here to repack then sent to you ? I sent a case once to someone in China using the postal service and shipping wasnt that bad but I had to declare the case a gift.

I don't want to hijack this thread as it was started to celebrate a fellow forum members NGD. That guitar inspired me to get a FB1. I'm currently trying to get payment sorted out, having screwed up my new paypal acc, I'm speaking to Daves and an FB1 will be mine, thanks for your suggestion and thoughts - love this forum. In a few weeks I'll be joining the club, inspired by PE's fab bird.

These look pretty damn nice. Is Dave's the only place that'll be carrying them, or is this a possible Gibson R run?

Re: New Gibson Firebird I (Clapton)

I'm going to start a new thread I don't want to high jack (again) PE's fab score, but the bird is in the house, case open getting ready for a tune up. On a side note and a small fact pointing to the sad state of the current world, it took as long, with lots of cost to transfer the money to daves as it did for the guitar to be physically shipped to me in the uk
Report and pictures to follow.

Pip, how much was due to bank-enforced bad exchange rates and how much for specific fees? Not looking for actual numbers, just trying to get an idea of why it was so expensive. The FX rates are hard to avoid unless you have a good bank, but there should only be smallish fees for this. Wire transfers shouldn't be that bad these days.

I paid around £37 pounds in bank charges, the ER was ok. On arrival I paid 23% import duty. Shipping was $175. - it's a big box! I'm really happy with the guitar, and I got a dream machine, that you would never normally see even in the states - review and pictures to follow, but it is a stnner. Daves where great, so big up to Tylor.

Yeah, the 23% was 20% VAT and 3% customs. Sounds like they sent it USPS Priority, which is by far the best way to go - and you're right, those Firebird boxes are big!

Glad it all worked out - enjoy!

No, that was forum member Andreja's. He passed away earlier this year, and I've kept it there in remembrance of him - he was a great guy.

My '64 FB I is in the closet, stripped of an ugly refin, waiting for me to find the time and the cojones to do a new coat of paint.

Re: New Gibson Firebird I (Clapton)

Beautiful guitar, but why doesn't Gibson get smart and put vintage-correct Firebird pickups at least on the Historics/Custom Shop Birds instead of those hot ceramic p/u's?. They must be aware of all of the complaints from Firebird lovers about those ceramics. I just don't understand this.
