Re: Jeff Beck Group/Grande Ballroom 11/68...

I think it was a regular thing for Beck. There are other photos of him out there with his Marshall cabs stacked like that. Plus, its obviously intentional since both the top and bottom cabs are the top angled models. There's a B&W picture of Beck from the Rough & Ready era playing the stripped burst while sitting on top of an AC30. The angled cabs are stacked right next to him.

God i love this era of Beck. I wish i had a pair of AC30s to run my LP through for the Truth tone.

He was not generally believed to be the most inventive amongst the UK "greats" at the time... As of more recent years and his later work, then probably yes.

I like Blow By Blow and Wired, but i prefer his earlier stuff so much more. Yardbirds up through BBA is what i like best.

Beck is the best! . Just ask Eric C. or your beloved Jimmy Page

Yes, that's Jimmy on bass. After Eric left the Yardbirds Jimmy was asked to replace him but couldn't take the gig. He recommended his friend, Jeff Beck. Later Page did join the band, first on bass, before moving onto second lead guitar, then after Beck left taking the lead on his own.

I kinda like the black pickguard. It's a different look, that's for sure.

It's funny because a lot of Beck's guitars have weird quirks:

The Esquire with the forearm cut, this LP w/the black pickguard, the Strat with the busted pickguard, the Blow by Blow LP, the pink Jackson w/Tina Turner's autograph carved into it...the Tele-Gibb..

Almost forget, this unfortunate fiddle:

I'll be damned if that scene doeesn't make me laugh every time i see it. Awesome!

I kinda like the black pickguard. Its weird but i think it looks cool. In the book about FREE, Heavy Load, there is a small picture of Paul Kossoff with his famous stripped burst and this guitar also had a black pickguard before he removed it.

JEFF BECK GROUP
GRANDE BALLROOM, DETROIT, USA
NOVEMBER 1968

BAND:
Jeff Beck - guitar
Rod Stewart - vocals
Nicky Hopkins - keyboards
Ron Wood - bass
Mickey Waller - drums

SETLIST:
01. shapes of things
02. you shook me>>>let me love you
03. blues deluxe
04. jeff's boogie
05. rock my plimsoul
06. natural woman
07. rice pudding
08. sweet little angel

Nicky Hopkins is especially good on this recording. He does a nice version of Aretha's "Natural Woman" that Beck adds a lot to....

Folks are saying this is the best live recording of this era of the Beck band....
Too bad they never did a real nice legit live release, because they are really cookin'...

I saw them a few weeks after this gig, and this is the first recording that documents what I think I saw.... :-)
I tried searching for it and I can't find it. Can you post me a direct link to the concert? Thanks!

Who started that idea of removing the pickup covers back then?

Supposedly, Clapton. Whether it was actually his idea, who knows.

Really? Who in your view was more inventive? A relative question I know but I'd like to hear your thoughts and why.
