Let's hear it for the Les Paul Studio!

I know how much you guys love a rambling story so...

A friend of mine recently sold his '88 PRS because he decided he liked his '03 Les Paul Standard better. So with a small portion of the cash he got from the PRS he bought a 97 LP Studio as a backup to his main Les Paul. After playing it for about a week he decided he liked the sound of the Studio over the Standard, and that this was the fault of the Burstbucker Pros (probably not entirely untrue, as I found with mine). I do his tech work for him, so he handed me the Studio and the Standard and told me to pull the pickups from the Studio and put them in place of the Standards BBs.

I got home and took the Studio out of it's case; it was covered with grime and the strings were ancient, plus it was in need of a set-up. It hadn't been modded (apart from straplocks), but it had been played hard and displayed a number of moderate sized dinks and bumps - looked like it had been dropped a few times. Out of curiosity, and before I took the soldering iron to it, I plugged it in to my little Laney LC15R, and something magic happened - this little Studio had got some seriously nice tone to it. I couldn't stop playing for long enough to do the pickup job, and the more I played it the more I fell in love with the damn thing!

Bollocks to it! I took off the old strings, scrubbed the dirt off, polished it and gave it some new strings and a set-up. Plugged it back in. Magic. Just magic.

So now I just can't bring myself to part the pickups out of it. In fact I'm going to advise him to leave well alone. Messing with this little gem would be a huge mistake! I'll source some appropriate pickups for his Standard and when I've got the cash together I'll make him an offer he can't refuse on the Studio.

Anyway, all this got me thinking - The Les Paul Studio doesn't get nearly enough praise round here. How many times do you walk into a venue and see a guitarist strumming, chugging or wailing on a Studio? There's one in every other band where I come from! The punks love them. The rockers love them. The bluesers love them. The metallers love them. The indie crowd love them...

So let's hear it for the Les Paul Studio!

(That's your cue to post a photo.)

Here's the one I've been gushing about, in all it's new found shiny glory.

The 96-97 Studio Gems with P90s are just plain and simple a wonderful guitar to play live. I use mine in conjunction with my Les Paul standard & USA standard strat. In actual fact the studio gem probably gets more gigging time than the other two. Love those P90s.

I couldn't agree more...I recently did the same with my Studio. New strings with a setup and it sounds freaking great. She has a lot of battle scars...but never lets me down...

Here's my '92. Got it for $400.00 with no pickups. Dropped in a set of WCR Filmores and left the bumps and dings as earned mojo and now, a spectacular sounding instrument competing with my LP Standard for my affections.

Yeah....I dig em. Best feature besides the price is no neck binding, or binding nubs, nibs or plastic fret ends. Just pure metal to bend, slide and shake.

Put cream parts and chrome on those wine reds....please.

Thanks for sharing, Gents
I've got an 88 Alpine White, ebony board dot neck and a 93 Wine Red, rosewood w/traps.

Both fine guitars, but that's just my opinion

Re: Let's hear it for the Les Paul Studio!

My '95 Studio was my first LP and I loved it then and I love it now. I've put in WB Firewater pickups and that has given me a lot more tone definition. It's just damn fun to play.

Long live the Studio!!

Re: Let's hear it for the Les Paul Studio!

theres some fine looking guitars here--
the premplus is awesome--
and that bluetop with bigsby is obscene--
always loved that re-fin goldtop,

I have 3 studios, first was a Gothic, which i never really gelled with (caused me to buy my first standard )

my second, was my own well documented re-fin--the Raw-raw power, which has 490/498 pups, and the fattest neck i own -a 95.
here he is=
[IMG][/IMG]

and then i saw another, which i had to have--an 02, with the pups and electrics from a recent standard--I messed with the plastic to get more comfortable with it, but its one of my favs---got me gassing for a VM right now--
heres the 2 together

definately money well spent.
cheers guys

No, but it was just your 'standard' '95 Wine Red LP Studio...played by a guy in a punk band who had stickers all over it...and used a garden trowel for a pick. A decent chunk of wood was missing from the bottom of the cutaway, probably in an effort to "rawk", and it was just generally an ugly duckling. I'm a sucker for an old GT, so what they hey?

I work for RS Guitarworks, so I had some pretty cool guys to assist me in the project...

You can find what one would expect to pay at the RS website.

I might give it a go this weekend.

Hey, thanks. I found 'em on the 'bay, for around $45, so I grabbed them. They're 14:1, I believe. I like the stock ones, but I just had to have the shiny.

Mine is a mid '95 that I bought in January '04. I remember the date because I had just quit smoking and decided to buy a guitar to remind myself how stupid it was to keep setting fire to my money...

It was love at first play, my first Gibson and to this day probably my best guitar. It plays so nicely and felt like a HUUUUGE step up from the Epiphone Standard I traded in against it (no disrespect to those of you who have Epis BTW it served me well).

I sometimes wonder if I should maybe upgrade the pickups/pots but then I just think naah....leave it as it is...
