• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Hi,
I joined a Facebook debate , where someone posed this question.

- LP Custom appears to have restarted in July 1968
- A decision made to introduce a maple cap , sometime in 1969
- James Williamson's 'raw power' LPC in for restoration during 2010, quoted as being a '69... he definitely had it before joining the Stooges in 1971
- reverb.com quoting ebony as the only finish available in 1969
- I've been unable to find other evidence of an LPC , Pre-1970, with cherry sunburst finish

Does anyone know when this finish became available? Is the earliest known serial number with this finish known ?

Many thanks.

Regards
Joe

68 Customs had maple cap too.

First cherryburst or simply non-ebony Customs (Deluxes too btw.) were available in early 1971, not earlier. I have had one of the earliest with pots from 3rd week of 1971, still with block letter 70 type Gibson logo. Never saw earlier one.

They had Maple caps from the start in 1968. Was the Maple top two or three piece?

Early '71..bottom line.

Lots of misquotes out there, even by famous people..
