I have one. Flip out tuners. Some mahogany necks.
Mine has no volute/maple neck. None should be weight relived yet.
Might have the wider Nashville bridge.81-82. Shaws. protector case.:)

Transitional year, still with maple necks, some with mahogany. No weight relief. Short rocker type neck tenon and most without volutes. Often really very heavy in weight.

According to Gibson weight relief 9 holes started during 1982.

Even nearly all 83s i ever tried were really extra heavy (all above 10.5 lbs), so i would really doubt, that even in 83 some were weight relieved. :hmm

According to Gibson weight relief 9 holes started during 1982.

Back in August, one LPF member who's a former Gibson employee noted:

I get a lot of questions asking about weight relief.

The way I remember it, was that it started with LP Studios in early '83.
The thinking was "if this doesn't work, then we haven't ruined a bunch of expensive guitars."

But, as we know, it did work, and eventually spread to other models.

My hernia and I doubt very much that my '83 Custom was weight relieved.

Even a heavy Les Paul can be weight relieved. I guess X-ray is the only way to be sure. I don't think those 9 holes makes for a huge difference in weight.

I had a white 82 Custom. Mahogany neck, no volute, top carve for days. Great guitar. Say what you will about Henry, but that guitar was such an improvement over what came out just one year prior.
